This year, AI-powered tools, voice search optimisation, and mobile-friendly content are leading the charge. To rank higher on Google, you’ll need to focus on creating relevant, valuable content that aligns with the EEAT strategy, while diving deep into keyword research and Core Web Vitals.

And that’s not all; effective link building, local SEO, and crafting content that meets search intent are more important than ever (literally).

Oh, and don’t forget about generative AI and featured snippets; they’re the SEO tricks everyone’s buzzing about in 2025. But there are simpler ways to get it done!  Big trends this year, and I’ve got the easy tips to get you there! Let’s go, rankers!

Top 10 SEO Trends in 2025 and Why They Matter

The more you want to rank on Google, the harder it makes it. But only if you are still playing by the old rules. Google, along with other search engines, is like a girl with constant mood swings. Never really knowing how it feels (we feel you).

As a result, it is almost always updating its algorithm. At this point, Google’s algorithm updates faster than our salary increment (no jokes). However, this is exactly why it is important to stay ahead of the game. Search Engines like Google bring new search core updates several times a year.

As the algorithm shifts, ranking factors are revised, and new SEO trends ultimately emerge. As of 2025, here are the top 10 SEO trends to rank number 1 on Google:

  1. Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE)

Google’s SGE or AI Overview is its latest AI-powered search feature that presents AI-generated responses directly at the top of search results, pulling concise answers from a mix of authoritative content. It pulls together answers from multiple reliable sources, and then Google’s AI writes a conversational, synthesised, and concise response.

For instance, here is an AI overview for a query “what is SEO intent?”

what is seo content

Now, sometimes you’ll also see:

  • Citations/links to multiple pages (your site could be one)
  • A collapsible “Show More” or “See full answer” section
  • A “websites mentioned” carousel underneath the AI response

Why is it important for ranking?

AI Overview, or formerly known as SGE, often answers user queries without requiring a click. That means, if your content isn’t featured in the AI response, you may lose visibility even if you’re on the first page.

How to Rank on AI Overview?

So, how do we really rank on the AI overview? Can we even do that?
Short answer? Not really!
More honest and helpful answer? There are ways for AI to site your content! Here is how!
While you can’t exactly “rank” like traditional position, your content can still be cited, referenced, or linked from the AI overview if it meets certain quality signals.

Here is an example of cited content:

what is technical seo

Now, let’s talk about what you can do to be featured on the AI overview:

  • Analyse AI overview Performance:  Before you dive into specific tactics, it is important to analyse your current performance and position in the AI overview.  Fortunately, you can do this using tools like Semrush, Ahrefs, and Rank Ranger. For instance, SEMrush can help track the data on which of your keywords and pages trigger AI overviews. Doing so can help give you a better analysis of your AI overview performance.
  • Keep Your Focus on User Intent: The AI overview is all about user intent and answering the user’s searched queries. Your content is highly likely to be linked to the AI overview if it answers exactly what the reader seeks. One way to do so is to write content in depth and cover all aspects. Also make it reader friendly and easy to understand.
  • Incorporate Multimedia Content: Think of statistics, images, videos, graphs, and other multimedia content to add to your blogs. This increase the user experience, making the content easy to understand.
  1. Google Feature Snippet

No more tanking number 1, in 2025 we are aiming to rank on point zero. Here is how!

Another SEO trend in 2025 is Google Featured Snippet. I’m sure by now you all must have seen it. Google Feature snippet is the highlighted piece of text or a box of content from a webpage. This appears on top of the Google search results. Google snippet is also called “point zero.” It pulls a direct answer from a webpage and displays it in a styled box with a link to the source.

See this example of a feature snippet for the query “how to find the best SEO Agency?”

how to find best seo agency

Here, the highlighted text on top is the featured snippet appearing on position zero. This  provides users with an instant answer to their searched query without clicking on the page. However, if your content meets user intent, the user is highly likely to click on your site for more information. Hence, this ultimately increases your visibility.

Is AI overview and Feature Snippet the Same thing?

Let’s address something real quick. The battle between AI overview and feature snippet!

While both have the same intent; an instant, concise and easy to understand answer for a user query, they are not entirely the same.

Difference Between AI Overview and Featured Snippet

  • AI overview, as the name indicates, is an AI generated answer that combines insights from multiple reliable sources. Think of it like a mini Google ChatGPT, but it is powered by Gemini foundation; a Google AI generator.
  • In contrast, featured snippet site the most reliable and user intended answers from an existing webpage. It is like your website link appearing on position zero with proper and structure SEO.

How to Rank on Featured Snippet?

There are multiple ways you can rank on the Google snippet. Let’s cover them all step by step on how to optimise your content for the feature snippet:

Use Target Question Based Queries

A feature snippet usually answers users’ search queries seeking answers and information for specific content and topics. Therefore, using target question based queries in your content, starting with words like “who, what, where, when, why, how keywords, can help optimise your content.

One way to do this is by using SEMrush to find the most relevant keywords using question based words. Another way is to craft content around frequently asked questions popped on Google for your intended keyword.

For instance;

Here are the common faqs for a query, “common technical SEO errors”

Using this gives you an idea of what people are searching for and how to address these questions. Similarly, using question based keywords help optimize your content for feature snippet.

Also, incorporate keywords at the bottom of your Google search page under the heading “people also search for” to better optimize your content for SEO.

Provide Concise and Direct Answers

  • Google loves content that answers questions in 40–60 words (roughly 2–3 lines).
Use a definition-style paragraph right after your heading/question.
  • Keep the tone conversational and user friendly.

Use Header Tags (H1, H2, H3) Wisely

  • Break content into logical sections and paragraphs.
  • Use H2 for questions, and place the answer right below.

Use Lists, Tables & Steps

Google often pulls:

  • Numbered steps for “how-to” queries
  • Bullet lists for ranking or selection-based queries
  • Tables for comparisons or pricing

Try to write your content in listicles and bullet points under headings for better readability.

Optimise for Long-Tail Keyword

  • Featured snippets are more likely to appear for longer, specific queries rather than short head terms. Use long tail keywords like “best SEO agency in the USA” than just “best seo agency.” Using long tail keywords for SEO can improve your ranking.

 Include an FAQ Section

  • Answer common related questions in a clear format. This gives you multiple chances to win snippets.

Use Optimised Paragraph Under H1

Another effective and easy way to rank your content on featured snippets is by optimizing the first paragraph under H1. To do this, use the definition based language right away and add the most searched terms in your paragraph. Keep it concise between 4–5 lines

Here is how to find the most searched and optimized keywords for your featured snippet paragraph, other than SEMrush.

  • Search for the keyword of your query on Google. For example, here is one “Best Fashion Trends in 2025”
  • Use extensions like “Google search 100 results” to show maximum results on a single page.

Now, extract the bold terms on the search page. You can use an extension like “Google Bold Extractor” to extract all the bold keywords in one go. For instance:

  • Next, click on copy all keywords and paste them into ChatGPT. Prompt it to give one-liner keywords out of all these words in a single list.
  • Once you get the list of single keywords, use these words to craft the first paragraph under your H1 to optimize it for feature snippets.
  • Doing so incorporates most user search queries and words into a single paragraph,, all while offering user intended information. This is all your feature snippet hunts.
  1. Use Keyword Gap in SEMRUSH for Better Analysis

Understanding the keyword gap between you and your competitors is another trendy trick to rank on Google. Keyword Gap helps you compare your website’s keyword ranking to your competitors. The complete data helps you analyse your weak points and where you can further improve.

To do this, follow these simple steps:

  1. Go to Semrush and click on Keyword Gap under competitive research.
  2. Add your domain and select the country you are ranking against.
  3. Click on Add up to 3 competitors and add their domain.
  4. You can choose the type of keywords you want to analyse from “Organic keywords, paid keywords, PLA keywords”

Semrush will give you a detailed analysis of the keywords your competitors rank for and you don’t. Furthermore, you can also see what keywords you and your competitors share and identify the common ground.

Understanding this is crucial to developing effective SEO strategies and optimizing your content for better ranking.

  1. Understand Search Intent Properly

Understanding search intent has gone from “what people are searching” to also “why people are searching this”. The intent behind the query is important to help you target the right audience. As a content optimizer, you must understand the different search intents and optimize your content accordingly.

You need to optimize your content to give exactly what the reader seeks. Your keywords and the words used in them can help determine the intent. For instance, the keyword “Best gym wear” has a commercial intent.

semrush

This means people are still trying to make up their minds and see what gym shoes are best for them. The type of content they are looking for probably is listicle that mentions top best shoes for the gym.

However, the keyword “where to buy the best gym wear, or best gym wear to buy” indicates transactional intent. Here, your target audience is the one looking to buy gym wear. This is where you mention your best products.

semrush

Understanding user intent helps give you a better picture of what users are looking for and why. You can then craft your content according. One thing to note is that a user can be looking for two or more intents together.

This is where you let your inner creativity out and optimize and craft your content to meet multiple intents.

  1. Voice Search and User Experience

Voice search is gaining popularity, and it is now in demand more than ever. Google’s voice search updates allow people to search through their voice instead of typing. This can clearly impact your ranking if your content isn’t optimised for voice searches.

This is why it is recommended to use natural language and commonly used phrases to target a mass audience. Similarly, variations in keywords and the use of LSI are highly recommended. Alongside keyword stuffing, it is important to avoid stuffing random words, as it can hinder your ranking, leading to bounce rate. Instead, use variations and LSI’s.

User Experience

User experience is equally important for a better SEO ranking on Google. This is where your technical SEO jumps in. Make your website and page mobile friendly with better responsiveness. Prioritizing website loading speed, UI/UX design, easy user friendly interface, and stability ensures better ranking.

  1. Optimize Your Title and Headings

Furthermore, optimizing your website page is an effective way to ensure a better ranking. Add top searched keywords and user searched terms on your main title of the page, meta description, H1 and H2 headings. The optimized title of your page is highly likely to rank number 1 on Google.

For example, let’s search the term “serums for Acne”. Here is the top result.

google search engine result

Now the title of the first page, “Anti Acne Skin Serum- Serum for Acne Prone Skin” is completely optimized to include all high search words. The terms “Anti acne, serum, acne prone” are the words that can help this website jump to the topic for this keyword.

Meta Description

Now, along with the proper SEO optimized title, it is also important to add frequently used terms and keywords in the meta description. For instance, the one below has common user searched words like “Acne”, “acne prone skin”, “pimples”, “redness”, “serum”, etc. This targets the user intent and optimizes your page for better ranking.

The same should be done for the website URL and other H1 and H2 headings.

  1. E-E-A-T Strategy

Before the content has prioritized E-A-T strategy (expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness). Now there is an additional “E” for experience. EEAT (experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness) is still highly encouraged by Google for ranking. Now focus not only on creating with expertise in the area, and reliable information. But also including experiences.

Google values personal experiences. Many interactive and forum based platforms like Reddit and Quora are rapidly gaining popularity. This is due to the experience factor.

Now is the time to create content that gives an insight into personal opinion and experience, showcases your expertise and authority in your field, links to reputable sources, and focuses on creating a genuinely helpful blog.

However, refrain from adding too much experience. Readers want to know unbiased results, but they are likely to trust a reliable source backed data.

Use AI Smartly

There is no SEO without content! Content of any sort, whether it is:

  • Blog posts
  • Guests posts
  • Landing pages
  • Product Pages
  • Website content
  • Guides and News

Or any part of the media and visuals is what drives users to your website. This is where you win the race. As for AI, it is leading the race!

In recent years, we have seen a lot of shifts in AI. With OpenAI, creators are now using ChatGPT to write the content wholly. But is it the way?

Not likely! The best SEO and content writers know one thing;

How to use ChatGPT to AUGMENT their content, not CREATE it. AI can do a lot for your writing, it is a valuable tool for research, it can summarize content, make existing one shorter, and can even give tabular and listicle forms.

However, this is only if you know how to use it correctly, not completely. Here is what you can do:

  • Use AI for research Purposes and to get Ideas
  • Use AI for keyword suggestions and LS1s
  • Use it to structure your content and to identify weaknesses and strengths of your blog

This doesn’t just apply to writers; your creators, editors, and designers can all benefit from this approach. Remember, as much as AI is growing, users seek personalised and human written content.

  1. Create Brand Awareness and Presence

Backlinks have always been an important part of SEO for organic reach. But in 2025, it’s more than that! Creating brand awareness and presence is highly encouraged. Link building and backlinks are a great way to grow your website’s authority and organic reach.

However, in 2025, make sure you are not left behind on the following:

  • Build Brand presence on social media and TikTok
  • Takes links from forums and discussion based platforms
  • Respond to user questions and concerns on platforms like Reddit and Quora

Now, these are not strict SEO rules, but they can still influence your ranking. Word of mouth and your brand presence can make users visit your sites and help Google recognize your content.

  1. Optimize Your Blog Image

One thing about Google images, they are not going anywhere anytime soon. This is still hot, even in 2025! Optimizing your blog image is one effective way to bring organic traffic and rank your blog post. For this, make sure to:

  • Add high-quality, relevant, and fast-loading images to your blog
  • Write an image description, including Alt text, with a relevant keyword
  • Set its size to 1080sq to 1080sq for best results
  1. Use the Best AI Tools in 2025 for Effective SEO

Lastly, one thing an SEO expert knows is the smart and strategic usage of SEO tools. There are multiple smart ways to use them to improve your ranking.
